Although this will definitely split the population further, as any different ruleset, it is still quite interesting to follow. There will probably be people coming back for this. It is surprising however that even SI is excluded from this server. Wich will probably mean no Savages. Valkyries will anyhow be included and Thurgists will be excluded. Archers will come in the modern state wich is understandable. Read more here at the Camelot Herald.
On with the speculations. Will this server be incredibly popular at start just to fall to rock bottom a month later, or will it stabilize and become as much a success as the implemention of the NoToA servers (wrongfully a.k.a. Classic)? (Have in mind there was only success in USA, while in Europe it died horribly.)
I think they'll have a spurt in population be good for a few months and then die off quickly.
They're splitting the server populations, which will help kill off the servers faster. (See Classic servers.) More rulesets also means less available devtime for each - combined with whatever they've spent already that article suggests another 4-5 months of dev time for however many people thay've got on the project. Thats a lot of man hours which is being burned on moving DAoC sideways rather than advancing the game as a whole.
Given that Mythic seem to be slowly desupporting DAoC that makes those hours even more precious. EG why is it only this server which is getting "new strategic elements ...[and]...objectives". Either because they don't have the time or it's a replacement for the realm missions and towers which exist in NF, which surely makes the whole thing a collossal waste of time.
I also don't think the boost in long term population will be that noticeable tbh. Lots of people moan and complain about how things were great in OF but to be blunt they're talking shite. They have their rose tinted goggles firmly strapped on and when they actually try it I'm fairly sure a lot of them will discover that an old loved game, improved in memory, doesn't look nearly as good in the flesh and especially not when half the content elsewhere has been gutted from it.
What I think Mythic should be doing is stop dicking around and improve the existing game. You know, the one which actually has players paying for right now.
Unless of course they are doing what I suspect, which is to use this as a testbed for WAR elements, in which case they've stopped caring about DAoC anyway.
Lots of and lots of Old School players will come tho.. those who did quit daoc after ToA ... and that amount of players is quite nice to have back to kill or to die for. got pretty much grp sorted for that server allrdy and waiting it to open. OF and basicly classic ruleset will be nice to have. but goz nothing is 100% sure atm will be hard.
edit : lol forgot what i did mean to say after hard ... customer did come and i did hit submit ... damn stupid

Yes Trey, the famous rose tinted glasses are indeed present among most people when the nostalgic moments of Old Frontiers are taken back to the spotlight, and you make a good point that most of the pve content especially have been gutted. However I think also Tapa is right about the people who quit when ToA came, and they won't notice any difference without the expansions after ToA as they've never even tried them, so they don't know what they're missing.
I think there are 2 different groups of people involved here. Those who feed on evolution and need expansions and more/new content to stay, and those who hate changes and quit because of them. I believe I belong to the first one and I also believe most people who are still playing do aswell. But there are many in the second group also, and I would think most quit long ago without looking back (atleast everyone I know did). How many of them actually considering coming back for this is unknown.
I know however many of those who came back for "Classic", NoToA servers, who got disappointed because it wasn't really "Classic". It still contained New Frontiers. Now let's see how their feelings are on "Origins".
I wonder if they bring back the old epic quests and armour or if the new ones stay. The old ones had a great story and was fun to complete, while I think the new ones got pretty boring when it's the same with each class over and over again. The rewards however were useless in the old ones, and the new epic armour will probably be the best you can get in a template mixed with some crafted stuff.
Aye me2, gonna download a free week trial and check it out when it starts. Always fun when a new server starts up, so many people everywhere. Then I will decide if I stay.
I reckon they'll stay but I think it would be nice if they went. Spellcrafting at least - it was SC that really put the nail in the coffin for most drop loot and quest rewards, so remove SC and you remove a lot of the easy twinking options. As the rewards from the later expansions are already gone (no expansions any more!) it pretty much ensures that no only will everyone not be capped but that twinking in general is an enormous amount of effort and not actually that effective.
Like it was way back when, when people thought wretch of winter drops in Raumarik were awesome.
